SAP Garden: Munich Becomes Germany's Olympic Bid City
Red Bull Stadion München GmbH, the operator of SAP Gardens, congratulates the City of Munich on winning the national selection process and pledges its full support for the bid as it moves forward.
The decision was made on Saturday at the extraordinary general assembly of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) in Baden-Baden. Munich prevailed over the Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr bid. Berlin had officially withdrawn its candidacy two days before the vote. Hamburg had already been eliminated from the national selection process.
SAP Garden to Host Basketball and Handball Games
SAP Garden is an integral part of Munich’s bid concept. The multifunctional arena in the Olympic Park is intended to serve as a potential venue for basketball and handball. Red Bull Stadion München GmbH had already provided strong support for the state capital’s bid during the national selection process.
“We congratulate the city of Munich and everyone involved who has worked with great dedication on this successful bid over the past few months. The decision is a tremendous success, and at the same time, it marks the beginning of the next and decisive phase of the bid,” says Oliver Wesp, managing director of Red Bull Stadion München GmbH. “Munich can rely on existing sports facilities, extensive experience with international sporting events, and broad public support. The SAP Garden is ready to do its part. We will therefore continue to support the city with full conviction as it moves forward.”
Possible Second Olympic Games in Munich
A key pillar of Munich’s bid is the use of existing or already planned sports venues. The SAP Garden opened in September 2024 and is one of the most modern sports arenas in Europe. It serves as the home arena for the Red Bull Munich ice hockey club and as an additional venue for FC Bayern Basketball. Since its opening, the arena has hosted nearly 150 sporting events, attracting just under 1.5 million visitors.
For Munich, this would be its second Olympic Games following the 1972 Summer Games. With the DOSB’s decision, the national selection process is complete. The next steps involve further developing the German bid within the international process and presenting it to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
