Rules & Playoff Format
Teams finishing in the top 10 of the DEL regular season standings after 52 games have qualified for the playoffs. The field is then divided into two groups. The top six teams automatically qualify for the playoff quarterfinals.
Teams ranked seventh through tenth will first compete in the first playoff round. The seventh-ranked team plays the tenth-ranked team for a spot in the quarterfinals—the eighth-ranked team faces the ninth-ranked team. The final two quarterfinalists will be determined in a best-of-three series, where two wins are required to advance to the next round.
The team that finished the DEL regular season in a higher position in the standings has home-ice advantage. This club starts the playoff round with the first game in front of its home crowd. After that, the venues alternate.
Best-of-Seven Starting in the Quarterfinals
The format also changes with the playoffs. The first playoff round is a best-of-three series (two wins to advance), while the quarterfinals and beyond are best-of-seven series (four wins required). Additionally, in the event of a tie after 60 minutes, there is no longer a five-minute overtime period followed by a shootout.
Instead, play continues five-on-five. In additional “periods” of 20 minutes each, play continues until one team scores and thus wins. As a result, the length of a playoff game can vary greatly. On March 22, 2008, the third quarterfinal matchup between the Kölner Haie and the Adler Mannheim, lasting 168 minutes and 16 seconds across a total of nine periods, became the longest game in DEL history to date.
Other notable features: The mandatory “handshake” and the joint celebration with the fans do not take place after individual games, but only upon the conclusion of the respective playoff series.
