Ice Hockey Coach Andre Rankel Introduced - International Match at SAP Garden
On Thursday, the DEB visited Europe’s most modern sports arena. In the state-of-the-art press conference room at SAP Garden—complete with a large LED advertising wall in the background and several digital displays—the new national team coach was officially introduced by DEB Chairman Frank Lutz and Sports Director Christian Künast.
Final World Championship warm-up game at SAP Garden
At the same time, another announcement was made that directly affects the SAP Garden. The German national team will play its final warm-up game ahead of the 2027 World Championship—which will take place in Düsseldorf and Mannheim—at Munich’s SAP Garden. It will be the first international ice hockey game at the sports arena, which opened in September 2024.

Rankel, who most recently served as an assistant coach for the German champions Eisbären Berlin for four years, succeeds former national team coach Harold Kreis.
The 41-year-old has previously served as head coach of the U18 national team and acted as an assistant coach for the DEB at the 2024 Deutschland Cup. The former professional is also known for his time on the ice. Over 17 DEL seasons, Rankel made 865 appearances—all for the Eisbären Berlin. As a forward, he represented the DEB team at seven World Championships and was a member of the 2010 Olympic squad.
