Start of a new handball era
“The match in Munich's new SAP Garden is causing quite a stir,” says Mark Schober, CEO of the German Handball Federation. “That's where the Handball World Cup will also begin for our team in January 2027.” The international match in one of Europe's most modern sports arenas is therefore more than just a test game: it marks the beginning of a new era of handball for the German national team in Munich.
DHB Länderspiel Deutschland vs. Island
Opened in late summer 2024, the arena has already set new standards with its flexible event concept and modern infrastructure. On August 23, the Super Cups of the Women's and Men's Handball Bundesliga will take place there, followed in November by the first appearance of the DHB selection in the new multifunctional sports arena.
Opponents Iceland are a real test: the team coached by Snorri Steinn Gudjonsson, who is well known in Germany as a former player, is one of the established nations in European handball. The 84 matches between Germany and Iceland to date (51 wins for Germany, 6 draws, 27 defeats) promise excitement and high-class handball. For German national coach Alfred Gislason, himself a native of Iceland, the match is particularly emotional.
“These two games mark the start of our preparations for the European Championship,” says Gislason. “Playing against Iceland always has a special meaning for me – so it's all the more wonderful that this game is taking place in such an impressive new arena as the SAP Garden.”
