Foundation created for sport: Concreting of the ice rinks completedNext milestone on the road to ice sports// NEWSThe SAP Garden continues to make progress. With the concreting of all ice surfaces, another milestone has been reached in preparing the SAP Garden for ice hockey and popular sports.
Just a few weeks ago, the City of Munich and Red Bull Stadion München GmbH agreed on a comprehensive ice time package. From August 1, 2024, the city will have around 7,900 hours available on the three additional ice rinks. In addition, there will be 160 hours in the large Arena Bowl.
How the important concrete layer was created
The concreting of the ice rinks has now been completed. The four panels - the large bowl and the three secondary ice surfaces - were each covered with around 285 m³ of concrete. In addition, there is a top layer of clean concrete of 134 m³ each. The slabs can bear a load of up to 23 tons and can therefore easily withstand large structures for upcoming events.

The concrete was poured in a single, uninterrupted process. Afterwards, the surfaces were leveled using a laser-controlled surface finisher. This technique meant that the height of the concrete did not deviate by more than three millimetres at any point.
Foundation for the ice has been created
The multi-layered concrete layer, under which various seals and the cooling pipes are located, forms the basis for the ice that will be added later and therefore also for professional and recreational ice sports. The concrete takes seven days to dry - after 28 days it is completely walkable.
